KOTTIE PALOMA
Kottie Paloma’s darkly humorous and expressionist works shed light on the darker and more ridiculous side of humanity. Located halfway between representation and abstraction, two-tone paintings such as The Madness in My Area (2021) or Odd Journey to the Slow Dentist (2021) feature dense patterns of shapes and symbols, most of which are difficult to recognize or define. Paloma’s compositions, which often extend to the edges of his canvases, allude to fiction while remaining somewhat elusive. The artist is inspired by the characters he met during his nocturnal wanderings through the gentrifying neighborhoods of Berlin and the small village in northern Bavaria that he now calls home; Paloma constantly draws on aspects of her own experience to create his works, merging reality with a personal iconography extracted directly from his unconscious.
