The title refers to Julien Sorel, the main character in Stendhal’s novel The Red and The Black, and to Borges’ poem Afterglow. The composition draws inspiration from Cézanne’s Man in a Blue Smock, in which one of the workers on Cézanne’s estate sits before a painting of a lady in a dress holding a parasol, leaning against the wall. I was intrigued by the work’s layering or juxtaposition of images.
In Julien as Afterglow, I explore similar layers, weaving together references to art history and literature while interlacing elements of my own life. In this case, the painting includes someone from my immediate circle, merging the personal with the fictional.
