The painting is based on a photograph I took of a potted plant in my home. Later, I added two pigeons sitting on two branches, and transformed the background from a flat, monochrome blue wall into something that reads more as a sky.
Paintings of pigeons always bring to mind Luc Tuymans’ triptych Pigeons, which depicts three close-up views of pigeon eyes. Tuymans has referred to them as ”Europe’s rats,” making the pigeon an intriguing symbol—associated on the one hand with peace, and the other with vermin in Europe’s larger cities.
