Of all the new works, Portrait is the only painting based on a film still from the French movie Fat Girl (2001) that has been cropped.
Portrait demonstrates how I gather images into an extensive archive organized into various categories, like ”faces” or "plants," and later use those images for paintings. I prefer to forget the original context of an image, if there was one, to make it more interesting for myself when using it—almost like a director casting an actor in different roles. At the same time, the image exists in the collective memory as a film still from that specific movie.
As a painter, using an image that has ”lost” its meaning or where I’ve forgotten the context makes it easier to see the image as empty—empty enough for me to focus on how to paint it: the formal aspects, what colors to use, how to crop the image, and what to exclude or include from the film still, and so on. With Portrait, I wanted to make it more monochromatic, using yellow and greenish skin tones against blue eyes and pink lips.
