...these interiors are much more invented psychological spaces than real or remembered ones, and my intention is much more about creating a feeling rather than telling a specific story.
Anne Buckwalter
Anne Buckwalter (b. 1987, Lancaster, PA) is an American painter whose practice explores the intersection of sexuality and domestic life. Drawing on the folk art traditions of her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, Buckwalter constructs intimate interiors where everyday objects and symbols of desire coexist, crafting enigmatic narratives that embrace paradox and uncertainty. Her work investigates femininity, the body, and the hidden structures of identity, staging the erotic within the familiar as a way to reveal the complexity of private life.
Buckwalter earned her MFA from the Maine College of Art in Portland, ME (2012) and her BFA from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA (2010), also attending Temple University’s Rome Program in 2008. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2021), a Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant (2016), and a 2020 Idea Fund Grant, and has been an artist-in-residence at the Galveston Artist Residency, the Vermont Studio Center, the Studios at Mass MoCA, Hewnoaks Artist Colony, and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
