I want my works to be part of a very intimate space: like a curtain that moves back and forth in the room, next to an open window, or like a shirt that moves when someone breathes. I also want my works to contain a kind of existential paradox.
Matt Phillips

Matt Phillips (b. 1979, Roanoke, Virginia) is an American painter living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Known for his vibrant abstract paintings, Phillips weaves together simple shapes, modulated values, and intricate color relationships to create rhythmic and resonant compositions. His work has been exhibited internationally in institutions such as The Landing Gallery (Los Angeles), Reynolds Gallery (Richmond), Direktorenhaus Museum (Berlin), Studio d’Arte Raffaelli (Trento), and The Fores Project (London). Phillips is also a critic, curator, and Assistant Professor of Art at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
