Alexander Skats Sweden, b. 1986
Jaded is based on a photo found on the internet of a marble pillar with the head of Medusa at its bottom. In the painting, I altered the scale by working in a small format, erased the pillar, and painted a resting flower on top of the head to create a more human and intimate connection to the motif.
Being interested in the history and mythology of Western civilization, with roots in Ancient Greece, the Romans, and Christianity—along with their narratives, images, artifacts, and blend of the rational and irrational—I’m intrigued by how Western history has been used and abused in culture. For example, as a backdrop in the 1963 Godard film Contempt. The title is borrowed from Drake's song Jaded and refers to the emotional tension and exhaustion of the word, as well as the story of Medusa.
