Cooper and Massillon deconstruct cultural symbols not to dwell in trauma, but to celebrate the ingenuity, spirituality, and enduring vitality of Black life.
Outer Body Experiences brings together the compelling voices of contemporary artists Emmanuel Massillon and Darin Cooper in a powerful meditation on Black American consciousness.
Cooper’s mixed-media canvases reinterpret African-American spiritual traditions using experimental pigment techniques and collage, while Massillon’s textured sculptures transform found materials—such as sand, bullet shells, and wood—into reimagined symbols of cultural resistance.
Drawing on their shared roots in the American South and formal training in New York, the artists offer a joint narrative that is intimate, symbolic, and deeply grounded in Black experience.
