Rather than capturing a version of reality, Absher brings the transcendental world to life—bridging the seen and unseen through ecstatic brushwork and shifting technique.
Caroline Absher (b. 1994, Winston-Salem, North Carolina) is a Brooklyn-based artist known for her dynamic and intuitive approach to painting. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and has developed a practice that fluidly traverses abstraction and figuration. In her work, forms and colors dissolve into one another, evoking both the lyricism of memory and the immediacy of sensation.
Absher’s paintings are informed by her time as a solo world traveler—a journey that inspired her to turn inward and explore the landscapes of her own emotional terrain. She resists literal representation, instead constructing a transcendental vision of her subjects and their surroundings. Her shifting techniques and ecstatic iterations of form seek to bridge the external and internal, inferring a collective and infinite ephemerality.
Her recent solo and group exhibitions include The Silver Cord at The Journal Gallery, Los Angeles (2025); Persona at Fredericks & Freiser, New York (2025); Lighting (Striking) Blue at Loyal Gallery, Stockholm (2024); City Life at V1 Gallery, Copenhagen (2024); Blue Dream at Shrine, Los Angeles (2024); Back to Oz at Fredericks & Freiser, New York (2023); Tennis Elbow 107 at The Journal Gallery, New York (2022); Women of Now at Green Family Art Foundation, Texas (2021); as well as presentations at The Armory Show (2022, 2023, 2024) and Independent New York (2024). Earlier exhibitions include projects with Marvin Gardens, Mindy Solomon Gallery, Makasiini Contemporary, Thierry Goldberg Gallery, AM/PM Gallery, and others.
Residencies such as The Macedonia Institute (New York) and La Brea Artists Residency (Los Angeles) have further enriched her practice. Work by Absher is held in the permanent collection of the Portland Museum of Art. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
