The painting depicts a table set in a garden, suggesting a convivial moment. The people, however, are not present: only objects remain, as traces of something that has just happened or is about to happen. The only living presence is a cat hidden under the table, looking toward the viewer. The idea was to work on an absence that is not total, in which the scene is inhabited only by an animal—like a silent witness, not immediately visible, almost as if it were spying on the viewer as the painting’s view unfolds.
